The Oakpark area of Alta Vista has a long tradition of respecting and caring for Ottawa seniors.
The property on Smyth Road was once home to the Rideau Veterans Home, beginning back in 1946, where war veterans could undergo rehabilitation before reintegrating into the community. It evolved into a care facility and in the 90’s was eventually replaced by the Perley/Rideau Veterans Health Care Centre.
In 2003, the Rideau Veterans Memorial Park was unveiled on the site of the original Veterans Home, along with plans for a new mixed-use development including the new Oakpark retirement residence.
And through it all, one of the area’s oldest and best loved residents remains in the park itself – a 300+ year old burr oak tree – still strong, still healthy, a living legacy to the history of the site and which still welcomes passersby under the shade of its huge branches.
